Amethyst, a purple variety of Quartz, is easily one of the most recognizable minerals on the planet. Its name is from the word "amethystos", which is Greek for "not drunk". It was believed to be an antidote to drunkeness in those ancient times. Amethyst is found worldwide, but some regions are better known for their unique and beautiful specimens. Some popular varieties include Brandberg Amethyst from the Goboboseb Mountains, Namibia; rare elongated natural points from Veracruz, Mexico; and Hematite included specimens from Thunder Bay, Ontario.
