Elk Creek, South Dakota, is world-renowned for producing some of the finest gem-quality barite crystals, often found on a contrasting matrix of yellow fluorescent calcite. These specimens are highly sought after by collectors for their intense amber, honey, or "root beer" coloration and exceptional transparency.
Crystals range from golden-yellow to deep wine or smoky brown. The most prized pieces are "water clear" and gemmy. Typically found as prismatic, doubly-terminated crystals with sharp "chisel-point" ends. They occur within large septarian concretions in the Pierre Shale, a 70-million-year-old formation. Under ultraviolet (UV) light, the associated calcite often fluoresces bright yellow-white, while the barite itself can show white-yellow or orange-yellow fluorescence.
