Sodalite is anything but a fizzy mineral and is instead named for its sodium content mixed in with manganese and calcium. White streaks of calcite will discern this stone from lapis lazuli, which has gold streaks of pyrite. Sodalite will also be more of a royal blue color versus the ultramarine blue that lapis is known for. Sodalite sometimes comes in varieties of pink and is then called hackmanite, which also changes color when exposed to sunlight (a process called reversible photochromism or tenebrescence).
Originally found in Greenland, sodalite continues to be sourced from Canada, Brazil, and Afghanistan. Its initial discovery in Canada lead to its use as an ornamental stone, such as in the home of the Princess of Wales in 1891. Today, it continues to be the lower price tag option in jewelry, as opposed to its lapis cousin. The vibrant and deep blues have avoided the high-profile jewelry stores due to its inconsistent coloring, which in turn keeps the price down in its availability.
