Black star diopside is a variety of the mineral diopside, known for its intriguing asterism or star effect caused by needle-like inclusions of magnetite or hematite. The gemstone's name is derived from the Greek words "di" meaning two and "opsis" meaning vision, referring to its double refraction property. Black star diopside is primarily found in India and Russia. While it has been known for centuries, it gained commercial popularity in the late 20th century. Composed of calcium magnesium silicate, black star diopside has a hardness of 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. Its deep black or dark brown color, coupled with the striking white star that appears under direct light, makes black star diopside a sought-after gemstone for cabochons and other jewelry applications.
