Carnelian is a variety of Chalcedony that gets its red, orange, and amber colors from iron oxide impurities. Although it is often a solid color, Carnelian also exhibits banded coloration. In banded form it would be considered an Agate as well as Carnelian. In ancient times, Carnelian was used as gemstone material and highly valued.
