The Sikhote-Alin meteorite is an iron meteorite that fell February 12, 1947 on the Sikhote-Alin Mountains in Russia. This is one of the largest meteorites to have been observed entering the atmosphere, and the sound from the fall could be heard for up to 300 km (190 miles) from the point of impact. A 20 mile long smoke trail from the fall remained the sky for several hours after impact. The strewn field covered about 1.3 square km, with many fragments causing craters, or embedding themselves into trees.
