The Seymchan meteorite's main mass of 272.3 kg was discovered in 1967 in the dry bed of the Hekandue River, with a second mass of 51 kg discovered several months later. A third mass was discovered in 2004 weighing about 50 kg.
There are two types of Seymchan specimens, those with and those without olivine crystals. Because of the recent find in 2004 showing olivine crystals in about 20% of specimens, the classification of the Seymchan meteorite was changed from iron to pallasite.
