It was discovered in June of 1967 during a survey by geologist F. A. Mednikov. The main mass was 272.4 kg (600 lbs) and a second specimen of 51 kg (112 lbs) was discovered about 20 meters away in October 1967.
During a new expedition in 2005, Dmitri Kachalin recovered about 50 kg of new material. About 20% of the new material was found to contain olivine crystals.
