Medusa, also called Gorgo, was one of the three monstrous Gorgons of Greek mythology. Anybody who gazed into her eyes would turn to stone. She was beheaded by the Greek hero Perseus, who then used her head as a weapon until he gave it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield.
Obsidian is formed when lava extruded from volcanos rapidly cools with little to no crystal growth. The high silica content of the lava it forms from gives obsidian its smooth, glassy texture and look. Obsidian is a very hard and brittle stone, and fractures with sharp edges. Obsidian is not a true mineral due to its lack of a crystalline structure, and as such is typically classified as a mineraloid.
Obsidian also appears in a variety called Sheen Obsidian. Gold Sheen Obsidian exhibits a beautiful gold shimmer when viewed from the correct angles. This gold sheen is due to gas bubbles in the lava that cool in successive layers. Rainbow Obsidian is another form of Sheen Obsidian that gets its iridescent sheen from inclusions of magnetite nanoparticles.
