Fluorite from Hastie's Quarry, Illinois
Approx. Dimensions: 4x2.5x2 inches
Approx. Weight: 344 grams
Locality: Hastie's Quarry, Hardin County, Illinois
Fluorite from Hastie’s Quarry (Hardin County, Illinois) is a prized North American mineral because it is one of the few remaining sources of "new" fluorite from the famous Cave-in-Rock District. While most major mines in the area closed decades ago, Hastie's is an active aggregate quarry that produces specimen-grade fluorite as a byproduct of its open-pit operations.
Under long-wave UV light, these specimens typically fluoresce a bright blue. Some pieces also show striking yellow-white fluorescence caused by internal hydrocarbon inclusions.
