Charoite is a stunningly beautiful and very rare silicate mineral. It is named for the Chara River in the Sakha Republic, Siberia, Russia and was first described in 1978. It is thought to have been discovered in the 1940's, but was not widely known until the 1970's partly because it has an unremarkable appearance in the field. Charoite exhibits a pearly luster with translucent lavender to purple colors, and is sometimes chatoyant. Because of its intense, swirling colors and chatoyant properties, it is sometimes thought that the material is synthetic or artificially enhanced.
