This piece sits on a custom milled acrylic base to securely hold the specimen, as shown in the photos.
Talk about a show-stopper! This exceptional golden scalenohedron calcite crystal sits in stark contrast to the dark sphalerite matrix it is nestled into. The calcite itself measures a whopping 7 inches across and has variations of lighter to deep golden color zones. It almost defies gravity in this custom milled acrylic base. With the large weight of sphalerite toward the back, the piece is able to be propped up near vertical yet still display securely.
Part of a zinc occurrence first discovered in 1969, the Elmwood Mine was first operated in 1975. It closed in 2004 due to the mine owner company's closure, but reopened in 2010 under new operators. Elmwood has produced world class specimens of calcite and fluorite, as well as barite and sphalerite. Sadly, the mine was closed once again at the end of December, 2023.
