This beautiful yellow fluorite specimen from Minerva Mine comes on a labeled acrylic base that allows the specimen to be displayed at an optimal viewing angle. The specimen is in great condition overall, with very minimal damage. The faces of the fluorite have very "digital" growth habits, and there is minor zoning of very light purple at the edges.
The Minerva No. 1 Mine, located in Hardin County, Illinois, is one of the most famous fluorite-producing localities in the United States. Developed in the early 20th century and active for much of the mid-1900s, the mine was a major source of fluorite (fluorspar) used in steelmaking and chemical industries. It was part of the Illinois–Kentucky Fluorspar District, one of the most important fluorspar regions in North America.
Beyond its industrial significance, the Minerva No. 1 Mine is celebrated among mineral collectors for its exceptional specimens, particularly vividly colored fluorite—often in shades of purple, blue, and yellow—frequently associated with calcite, sphalerite, and galena. Specimens from this mine are prized for their bright color, sharp cubic crystals, and classic American locality status.
