Faden quartz from Santander, Colombia, is a rare and highly aesthetic find, distinct from the more common specimens found in Pakistan or Russia. While Colombia is world-famous for its "needle" and "muzo-habit" high-clarity quartz, these Faden (German for "thread") crystals are specialized alpine-fissure growth formations characterized by a milky white central string running through the crystal.
The internal white "thread" is actually a zone of healed fractures and fluid inclusions. It marks the original point where the crystal was repeatedly snapped and "self-healed" by silica-rich fluids as the surrounding rock shifted during growth. Unlike the typical long, prismatic Colombian points, these usually form as tabular (flat) crystals or clusters that grow outward from the central thread.
