Hackmanite from the Kokcha Valley in Afghanistan is a sulfur-rich variety of sodalite known for its distinctive color-changing properties. Hackmanite can exhibit tenebrescence, a reversible color change triggered by exposure to ultraviolet light. When exposed to UV, the mineral may develop a pink or purple coloration that gradually fades when left in visible light or darkness, depending on the specimen. This effect results from changes in electronic states associated with defects in the mineral's crystal structure, making hackmanite a notable example of a naturally photochromic mineral.
