Ametrine is a bicolored gemstone that combines both amethyst and citrine in a single crystal. This unique combination occurs due to variations in oxidation states of iron within the crystal during its formation. Ametrine's history is relatively recent compared to its parent gemstones, with significant commercial mining starting in the 20th century in Bolivia. The gem is also found in other locations, including Brazil. Chemically, ametrine shares the properties of both amethyst and citrine, belonging to the quartz family with a composition of silicon dioxide. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, making it suitable for various jewelry applications. The distinct zoning of purple and yellow within ametrine, often arranged in striking bicolor patterns, enhances its appeal in the world of gemstone jewelry.
