Kentucky Agate was designated the official state rock of Kentucky in 2000. These agates are derived from the Borden Formation, a Mississippian age bedrock unit that spans Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, West Virginia, and Tennessee. They can be collected along some rivers where the Borden is exposed to weathering.
