The Giumentaro Mine in Sicily, Italy is a famous sulfur mine that also yielded many exceptional aragonite specimens such as this piece. This specimen features several elongated hexagonal aragonite crystals scattered about a more massive and sometimes botryoidal structure of aragonite. There is a bit of vibrant yellow sulfur attached to the back of the specimen.
Under long-wave UV light, shown in the first photo, these aragonite crystals glow a brilliant orange-pink, with a somewhat lavender undertone. The aragonite is also phosphorescent, holding its fluorescent charge for a few seconds after the UV light is out.
This piece includes the custom milled and labeled acrylic base to display the specimen upright and securely.
