Fossilized mosasaur tooth preserved in its original matrix. Mosasaurs were large marine reptiles that lived during the Late Cretaceous, roughly 100 to 66 million years ago, and their fossils are found in marine sediments deposited in ancient shallow seas. Mosasaur teeth are commonly recovered from areas such as Morocco, the United States, particularly the Western Interior, and parts of Europe and the Middle East. The tooth and surrounding matrix provide a natural example of the fossil as it was preserved in the sediment.
