Scoria, also called Lava Stone, is a very vesicular volcanic (igneous) rock that is typically dark colored. It may contain crystals called phenocrysts. Scoria is a low density rock but, unlike pumice, it will sink in water because its specific gravity is greater than 1. Scoria forms as part of a lava flow usually near the surface of the flow, or from lava ejected from a volcanic cone.
