This geode includes two acrylic stands to easily display both halves together. Matched pair of a Dugway geode from western Utah, cut open and polished reveal the quartz-lined interior. These geodes formed in volcanic rock and developed cavities that were later filled with silica-rich fluids, allowing quartz and other minerals to crystallize inside. The quartz can show a bright fluorescence under ultraviolet light due to trace amounts of activator elements and defects within the quartz crystal structure. The UV response can vary from specimen to specimen depending on the chemistry of the individual crystals.
