Cave calcite (aragonite) from Mexico, formed through the deposition of calcium carbonate from mineral-rich groundwater in a cave environment. Aragonite and calcite share the same chemical composition, calcium carbonate, but differ in their crystal structures. Aragonite can form delicate needle-like crystals and branching clusters, while cave deposits develop as water slowly releases dissolved minerals over time. These formations provide a record of the mineral-rich water and conditions within the cave.
