Smoky quartz from Piedra Parada, a mineral locality in Chihuahua, Mexico. Smoky quartz gets its brown to gray coloration from natural irradiation acting on trace amounts of aluminum within the quartz crystal structure. The intensity of the color varies depending on the crystal's chemical composition and exposure to natural radiation during its formation. The specimen represents one of the many varieties of quartz found in Mexico's mineral-rich regions.
